Suppose you are about to design an apparatus that should automaticallyshare its blueprint with future generations to come; what would yourconceptual design be? You might want a machine programmed to observe, continuously learn, andtake preventive precautions in its environment, akin to fight or flight impulses, as a form of security for its physical manifestation. To make this machine last long enough to carry offspring, you'd have to instila feeling of optimism, led by the pursuit of joy and the avoidance of suffering. You'll need to cultivate a persistent craving for pleasures, but the sensationof achieving these pleasures should be fleeting because a continuoussense of satisfaction will cause degeneration due to the unwillingness todevelop and change. The final attribute would be that such a machine would be preoccupiedwith accomplishing its goals, distracted by cravings, and not noticingthe irrationality of the constant, unrelenting race until it had passed. Natural selection's fundamental goal is to design all living beings to pass theirgenes to future generations, and all life is programmed to fulfil this mission.
